An important purpose of the title sequence that it should be able to create an atmosphere that manages to set the tone of the film, which can allow the audience to understand and interpret what genre the film is and what themes may appear throughout it. The use of music and graphics are able to have a very important impact on this, as well as being able to entice the audience. Another purpose of title sequences is to introduce characters. Regardless of whether these characters are vital or not, it helps to establish the plot or set up of the film.
Conventions of a title sequence
The first thing shown are usually logos or some form of ident. This is able to credit the production companies involved in producing it, and can give the audience a sense of excitement if they are a fan of fimls created by the franchise. For example, when watching 'Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens', seeing the Lucasfilm Ltd. Logo gave audiences the sense of excitement as it had been so long since they had seen the previous intsalment. After the logos have been presented, the title sequence mentions the companies again, followed by the names of the actors, directors, producers, and other significant crew members, such as editors and music supervisors/composers. These typefaces are usually integrated into the video, which makes it much more visually appealing and enticing for the audience. The setting is often introduced towards the end of the sequence, allowing the audience to establish where and when it's set.
Skyfall uses visuals and audio in order to entice the audience. The visuals are abstract and unique, immediately encapsulating the audiences attention, and the visuals are matched by Adele's song 'Skyfall', created for the production. Adele is a very popular artist known by many, which was able to further promote the movie and, looking at the lyrics of the song, can help audiences understand more as to the plot.
